May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a time to reflect on what we are doing for both our body and our mind. Our mental well-being is just as important as our physical health.
This is easy to forget.
A lot of times, people assume that taking care of the body physically is all that is needed to live a healthy lifestyle.
Here’s the thing…
Not only can taking care of ourselves physically really help our mental health, keeping ourselves healthy mentally can boost our physical health as well.
It’s good to remember that the mind and body rely on each other to be successful.
Doing something for one will help the other.
There are days where we feel down in the dumps and don’t feel like doing anything, especially taking time to go to the gym or cooking a healthy meal.
But the time when we least feel like it is when it’s most important.
Sometimes, you’ll wake up feeling horrible. If you stop hitting that snooze button and just get up to go on your run or head to spin class, it sucks at that moment. But the way you feel afterward will energize you and help that down feeling go away.
Cooking can be daunting when you feel like crap. By taking the time to prepare and consume a healthy meal, you’re going to feel so much better. You’re going to know that you did something good for yourself.
When we take care of ourselves and do good things for our bodies, it, in turn, can bring us out of a slump.
It’s important to work on our mental health in order to reach our physical health goals.
Discipline is obviously an important trait to have when we’re exercising and setting goals for ourselves. By finding ways to remind ourselves of our goals daily, it can help build habits.
Habits are a huge part of mental health. Bad habits bring us down, and good habits build us up. Finding strategies to establish good habits is key to a healthy mindset.
When we’re in the right state of mind, we can accomplish so much more.
Mental health is key to maintaining good physical health.
Being active and eating right are great ways to stay healthy. Working on the mind isn’t always as obvious. This month, let’s remind ourselves of the importance of taking care of our mental wellbeing as well as our physical health.
