They Created Organic Tampons

Jennifer Eden and her partner Gaby Alves created organic tampons, pads and panty liners for our female community! We asked Jen some questions about the beginnings of Tampon Tribe and some lessons learned along the way.

1.What/who inspired you to start your company?

I truly believe that all women should be able to chose what happens to their body – what they eat, what the wear, and the feminine hygiene that they use. I couldn’t believe how expensive organic feminine hygiene was and so set myself on a mission, with my business partner Gaby, to solve the problem! We are also passionate about our oceans and eliminating plastics, so we worked on a line that is completely plastic free – even our packaging is compostable as it’s made from potato starch. We give back to homeless women in our community, and deliver our products to your door with free shipping every month, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

2.Where did you grow up? What was your childhood like?

I grew up in Sydney Australia. My childhood was a fun and fortunate one. I have a great younger brother and two awesome and encouraging parents. As kids we spent all of our time outside, exploring, having adventures and playing sports and music. Sydney is a brilliant place to grow up, it always felt like everything was possible.

3.If you could have any super power what would it be and why?

Becoming invisible! That would be so much fun. I have a fun imagination, so it would be great to be able to sneak into rooms and hear and see what is going on, whenever I wanted.

4.Tell us a story/incident that happened while starting or running your company that may have made you feel defeated. Now tell us how you overcame that.

We were really excited about our first Indiegogo campaign and had high expectations for volume sales at discounted prices. We knew that we had to spend on advertising, but didn’t realise that to really succeed on crowdfunding platforms you have to invest a ton of cash to lead their rankings. After the first week we had not hit our 25% goal, despite decent sales. It was a little hard, but the feeling didn’t last for long. We decided to change the effort into one of market testing – we added new products, changed our giveback in response to customers, and saw a nice shift in purchasing patterns – so it was a brilliant exercise in the lead up to our launch and actually saved us a lot of money in the long run!

5.Have you ever been underestimated simply for being a woman? Tell us how.

No. I have been pretty lucky I guess. I always believe strongly in what I am doing, and somehow that comes through – I think being able to adapt to whoever you are speaking with – not just in terms of if they’re a guy or a girl, but what their interests are, how to engage them in conversation, really helps get people onside.

6.Are you working on any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

We are in a growth phase now for Tampon Tribe – so lots of fun promotions/product development and team growth. We are about to implement an ambassador program, which is very exciting, and our affiliate sales launch will go live in coming days.

7.What are your goals with the company?

To be the top aspirational brand in the organic feminine hygiene space. We are priced affordably, have a fun and inclusive approach to everything that we do, and love our giveback and women-empowerment focus.
