Flavor and Fun: It's Their Jam!
Best friends, Sabrina and Jessica, have a passion for unique and innovative flavors. This led them to start The Jam Stand, a business centered around the creation of delicious jams that will surprise and delight you. With flavors such as Peachy Siracha Jam and Sweet Wino Onion, these women are sharing their love for fun and food with the world. They are self-taught business owners and jam makers, and we are so excited to feature them as our Female Founders this week!
Oh, and if you didn't know, they are a part of our Billion Dollar Buyer family and were featured in 2016~
1.) Why did you start your company?
We started The Jam Stand as a passion project of two best friends. We wanted to make products that were fun, delicious, and innovative. We love having fun in the kitchen and wanted to share that.
2.) Tell us a story/incident that happened while starting or running your company that may have made you feel defeated. How did you overcome it?
Running your own business comes with many defeats, and we're not sure that ever totally goes away. We are self-taught in most areas, including jam making, so absolutely everything has come with a learning curve. There were times that we were really excited to bring a new product to market and it totally tanked. In a situation like that, we just had to be flexible and keep pushing.
3.) Have you ever been underestimated simply for being a woman? Tell us how.
We have definitely been underestimated for being women - especially young women. In our early years of growth, while getting our jams into larger grocery chains, we saw the deep inter-workings of how some areas are still very much an "old boys club." We would be in meetings where men would speak to us like we were their granddaughters. In situations like those, we had to really push through to let them know that we are badass women entrepreneurs and are to be taken seriously.
4.) Time management is always a tough thing to figure out. Do you have a system for it? Workout time, leisure time, etc.?
We cannot stress enough the importance of balance. It was a whirlwind when we started the company, to say the least. We were working 18 hour days sometimes - it needed to be done and we were more than happy to do it, but as time went on, we realized that model was not sustainable. We have learned to find ways to take a break, say for lunch meetings or coffee dates. We plan our fitness and events within our calendar. We are real calendar people, if it is on there, we will do it!
5.) Are you working on any upcoming projects you can tell us about?
We are actually working on a major re-brand as well as the launch of our Jam Stand Kids line.
We are also building out an ambassador program for anyone interested in joining The Jam Stand team and selling our products at local markets, events, or even online. We think this is a great way to spread the jam love and provide employment opportunities for the jam enthusiast. If any readers out there want to learn more about the program, feel free to contact us.
6.) What is your best advice for anyone starting their own business?
Something that was huge when starting our business was reaching out to the community around us and asking for help. Who better to offer advice than someone who is a few years ahead of you? We have a ton of mentors and can't thank them enough for all of their time and assistance along the way.
WANT TO TASTE THEIR JAM? YOU ARE IN LUCK! We will be giving away a 4 jam sampler with our Never Too Pretty TO SHOOT halter this Friday on Instagram!
